This cage measures 30″ x 18″ x 29″ high. I find it ideal for 2-3 rats but I highly suggest that 3 be the maximum number. My two full grown male boys fit in there perfectly but if I add my other two boys into the cage, it becomes a disaster of “Hey I had this spot first!” This cage also comes with a very durable blue hammock. It really does make an awesome starter cage. The 1/2 inch wire spacing allows for the housing of any size rat. I’ve kept little babies to 2-3 adults in this cage.
There are 3 removable platforms. At first, it’s appealing to have platforms since it gives the rats more areas to climb. However, I found the blue platforms to be a more troublesome than it’s worth. My rats’ urine and poop piled up on top and almost needed daily cleaning and even then, it was still pretty disgusting. I eventually removed the platforms and put in 2 hammocks and a hanging igloo.

I like that the two doors aren’t too narrow. I can almost wiggle everything in with a bit of maneuvering so that I don’t have to take off the cage from the base. For the past 8 months that I’ve had this cage, cleaning has been a breeze. The fact that the wires come off of the base makes it much easier to clean. I use newspaper as bedding and I just scoop it out, disinfect, rinse and lay new newspaper down. Reassembly is especially easy. You just put the wire casing back onto the base and snap the two locks on the side.
This cage isn’t chew proof by any means. I had another one of these cages for a few girls I was fostering. They chewed through the plastic base and processed to have a cookie fiesta during the night. That’s one thing to keep in mind when buying this cage. If you have chewy rats, you may want to look into a cage with a metal base instead.
